Why are overweight and obesity problems for children and teens?

In the United States, approximately 1 out of all 3 children and teens is overweight or obese. Children who are overweight or overweight are at risk for serious health problems as they get older, including the following:

Heart disease
Diabetes
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Asthma
Sleep apnea
Some types of cancer
Severe obesity can cause liver troubles and arthritis.

A child who is overweight or obese also may be tease or bullied about his or her weight, feel bad about his or her body, or be aware of isolated or alone. These feelings can interfere with a child’s ability to learn, make friends, and interact with others.

How can I tell if my child is overweight?
As children grow and develop, some weight change are normal. It may be hard for you to tell if your child is overweight. If you’re anxious about your child’s weight, talk to your family doctor. Your doctor can help determine whether your child is overweight by calculating his or her body mass index (BMI). BMI is an approximate compute of body fat. It is based on your child’s height and weight.

Many websites offer calculators to help adults determine their BMI. However, you should not use these calculators to determine your child’s BMI. Children’s BMI statistics are broken into categories called “percentiles.” Percentiles allow your doctor to compare your child with other children who are the same age, height, and sex. If your child’s BMI is higher than 85% of other children who are the same age, height, and sex, he or she is well thought-out overweight. If your child’s BMI is higher than 95% of other children who are the same age, height, and sex, he or she is considered obese.

What other tests may be needed?
If your doctor wants to bear out that your child’s extra weight is related to having too much body fat, he or she may take skinfold thickness measurements. This is done by using a special tool called a caliper to measure the thickness of the fat at certain area of the body (for example, the back of the upper arm or next to the belly button).

If your child has other symptom in addition to weight gain, your doctor may do tests to see whether another health problem could be upsetting your child’s weight.

Is my child overweight or obese because of genetics?
Genetics can play a role in babyhood overweight and obesity. Children who have overweight or obese family members are at greater risk of being overweight or obese. Often, genetics work in combination with environmental and behavioral factors. This earnings that a child’s eating and physical activity habits are just as important as family history in determining his or her weight.

Could my child’s weight gain be cause by a disease or hormone imbalance, or by a medicine he or she is taking?
In most cases, people who have a sickness or a hormone imbalance will have other symptoms in addition to weight gain. Be sure to tell your family doctor if you have noticed any changes in your child, such as fatigue, constipation, or dry skin. This in sequence will help your doctor evaluate your child’s weight gain.

Some medicines can make a payment to weight gain. Your doctor also will want to know about any medicine your child is taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. If your child gained weight after he or she began taking a medicine, let your medical doctor know.

Will my child grow out of being overweight as he or she gets older?
Your child probably will not breed out of being overweight unless you help him or her learn to make healthier choices. Studies have shown that family who are overweight or obese are also more likely to be round or obese as adults.

Should I consider a weight-loss diet for my child?
Do not put your child on a weight-loss diet without talking to your medical doctor first. Children need a certain amount of calories and nutrients to grow, learn, and develop.

What can I do to help my child who is overweight or obese?
Teach your child that proper nourishment and regular physical activity are the keys to maintaining a healthy weight. These good habits also protect against the health, social, and emotional problems that may result from being overweight or obese.

As a parent or primary caregiver, you have a lot of influence on your child. He or she will follow your example, so it’s important for you to be a good role model. Healthy eating and physical activity should involve the entire relatives, not just the child who is overweight or obese. Try not to think of the changes you’re making as a temporary “diet” or “program.” You are mounting lifelong habits to improve the health of your whole family.

Here are a few tips:

Have healthy snacks (for example, fruits like apples and bananas, and raw vegetables like carrots and celery) readily to be had. Don’t bring unhealthy foods into your home.
Include plenty of low-fat proteins, vegetables, and whole grains in the meals you make.
Avoid fast-food dining. If you do eat at a fast-food or sit-down eating place, choose the healthiest options available.
Limit your child’s time using a TV, computer, cell phone, or game station to no more than 1 to 2 hours a day. Set a good example by preventive your own screen time, too.
Encourage your child to find substantial activities he or she enjoys and get active. Aim for at least 1 hour of active play every day.

Make physical activity part of your whole family’s lifestyle. Take a walk, go for a bike ride, or do chores together. Plan active family outings.

Benefits Telltale Signs Your Yoga Routine Is No Longer Working

We all know it, the one steady in life is change. Just as life changes around us, the beloved yoga routine, which felt so right some years ago, may not be the best for us any longer.

But how do you know if it’s time to move on and mix it up a bit? Here are five signs that could be telling you that your present yoga routine is no longer operational for you.

1. You haven’t felt inspired by your practice in a long time.

Sure, you will not forever feel a divine inspiration to roll out your yoga mat, and that’s ok. These uninspired times teach us the power of consistency and the authority of routine. We develop when we stick with things, especially through the hard times. But if you have not been inspired by your practice for a long time, maybe it’s time to sit on your mat for a little self reflection.

Are you always working the same familiar poses? Is there a sequence or a pose you are avoiding? Maybe you need to mix it up, choose a more challenging routine, or opt for more mini, bite-size yoga sessions throughout your week instead of few better chunks.

2. Your lifestyle has undergone big changes.

Maybe you ongoing your yoga practice when you had more time on your hands, or your physical condition was different than it is today. It’s time to check that your yoga put into practice still complements your life today. Sometimes life can be hectic, and if on top of a very yang style life we cram a lot of powerful yoga into our day, it can be too much for the remains and the nervous system to handle.

If, on the other hand over, our lifestyle is very mellow and quiet, maybe Yin yoga would be too much of the same thing. Think about your lifestyle outside of the mat, and believe what could complement it. Take care of yourself and view physically as the holistic being you are.

3. You feel drained and worn out after every practice.

Are you driven and goal-oriented, and this is also reflected in your put into practice? If you are feeling exhausted during every yoga routine, or long after practicing, maybe it’s time to take a step back and listen to your body. Yoga is great to build muscle tone and stamina, but all of that does not build itself over night.

Every pose comes with more than a few prep poses, which you can explore before moving up to the full versions of the postures. Challenge yourself, but give physically time and space to develop. Remember, if you lose your breath, take a step back and tone it down a notch.

4. You “nail” every pose, every time.

It’s a great feeling when your practice flows effortlessly and you feel light, strong, and at one with your breath. But the bathmat is also a place of explorationa place to feel vulnerable and to try something you haven’t tried before.

It’s a safe place to be a learner; yoga is a journey after all, and being a beginner offers great humility and curious energy. So try something new! Try the pose that scares you (within safe limits), and explore what happens within you. equilibrium is everything.

5. You forgot why you are practicing to begin with.

When we start working yoga, we usually have an intention or a calling beyond the asana practice that pulls us onto the mat. There is something sacred, fascinating, and helpful waiting for us within the world of yoga, and we explore it with great openness and curiosity.

Are you still knowledge and curious to explore all sides of yoga? Maybe you can benefit to add more meditation, pranayama or yoga philosophy into your practice in order to find your motive again.

Yoga put into practice should develop with us, and we should feel free to modify it without feeling guilty about it. Take it slow when needed, spice it up when there is energy to be had, and always keep an open mind towards our practice.

Where are you at the moment with your practice? Is it still benefiting your current lifestyle, or are you very attached to one type of practice? Create several space for yourself to explore different opportunities and trust that the spark will come back again.

Benefits Why I Don’t Roll Up from a Standing Forward Fold

Your lovely yoga teacher has the whole class in a standing forward fold and says, “now, roll up to standing, vertebrae by vertebrae, with refinement and ease.” Have you followed these instructions and tried it? If you are a educator, have you taught this?

I used to do and teach this too. However, I don’t anymore because doing this led to me hurting myself (more on that later). Now, as a yoga therapist, I don’t teach this since it’s not a functional movement.
What do I mean by functional movements?

efficient movement involves moving in a way that is based on your real-world movement needs. This may include walking up the stairs, taking out the trash, receiving down on the floor to play with our kids or grandkids (and then picking them up), driving to yoga, or reaching to the top shelf to obtain the salsa and chips.

This list may seem silly to some, but if you have ever been limited by any of these, or know anyone that has, you appreciate how important such activities can be for sovereignty, empowerment, and meeting in the world.

Not all yoga is functionally-based. (Note: traditional yoga wasn’t meant for preparing people for practical real-world activities. On a basic level, yoga was urban for young, male monks. Unless you are a monk, I propose that your yoga practice might need to be a bit adapted for your modern body and lifestyle. However, that is a whole piece of writing in itself.

Some yoga move may have made their way from the dance or sports world, with no intention of conditioning our bodies and minds for practical needs of living in the world. One of the best examples of this is the common cue of rolling up to standing from a reputation forward fold.

Why I Don’t Roll Up From Standing Folds Anymore

roll up standing forward fold

This in all probability made its way from dance-trained yoga teachers. If you have a healthy back with no pain, arthritis, or disc issues, this may be fine (although I still don’t recommend it). However, it is a high risk pose for much of the inhabitants with the potential to cause a sudden injury like a herniated disc or intense spasm. It is not functional and, in many ways, does not encourage long-term back health.

We have probably all been told that when we pick up impressive heavy, we should bend from the knees and hips and not round into the back. I believe that our yoga practice should reinforcenot conflict with such recommendation, which are developed from an understanding of biomechanics and how the body functions.

I used to perform rolling up to standing in yoga classes because, hey, it feels graceful and the teacher said it was good for me. However, it clearly trained me to have poor body mechanics. Once, I bent over to pick up the trash, pulled a muscle, and had a back spasm that dropped me to the floor. It took weeks to fully recover. I had never had anything like this happen to me and I realized it was because of the way I was neurologically programing my movement patterns in yoga class. What we practice in yoga is indeed commanding

Now, after learning my lesson the hard way, I teach and practice coming up from a standing forward fold by hinging from the hips with an engaged core, long spine, and a (at least) slightly flexed knees.

An Alternative Method to Rolling Up

Try this method I have urbanized with the intention to neurologically program the mind and body towards defaulting to functional movement pattern:

From a standing advance fold, try bending the knees a little bit or quite a bit. Find the amount of bend in your knees that reduces pull in the back of your body.

Bring the hands to your hips. Engage your core beneath your hands (we are aiming to particularly activate the transverse abdominals, aka the “anatomical corset” and the pelvic floor). This should also help bring the spine into neutral, connotation that the low back is slightly curved into its natural position.

swanson forward fold

Keep your backbone long (and feel free to bend the knees more if needed) as you inhale to lift up to standing, leading with the back of your cranium.

Common Foods That Can Turn Toxic During Cooking Now

It can be easy to take for decided that foods we're accustomed to cooking with (especially healthy ones) are safe, but it turns absent that's not always true. While most of these foods won't make you keel over within minutes of ingestion, they could make you feel sick for the time being or the negative effects can build up in your organization over time like a cancer quite literally in some cases, actually.

The good news is that you don't necessarily need to flip out if you've cooked with and eaten these foods. The bad news is that a number of of them are really, really tasty but for your health's sake, now that you know their toxic potential, you should limit your drinking.

I know what you're philosophy. "Prithee tell, what are these dastardly delights?" Here are the 11 you should know about:

1. Microwave popcorn
Say it ain't so! Microwave popcorn bags are lined with perfluorooct anoic acid. This nonstick lining, when heated, might cause cancer with consistent exposure over time. Instead, make your own DIY microwave popcorn using paper lunch bags or buy a microwave air popper (Walmart, $15.97).

2. Burned toast (and burned food in general)
The European Union's health advisors give us all a good apology to chuck that burned toast  the chemical reaction that occurs when it's burned results in the production of acrylamide, which might cause severe nerve harm and cancer over time.

Sadly, while the chemical reactions may be slightly dissimilar, the risk of cancer also applies to burned meats and even beloved campfire staple the humble marshmallow. So if you burn your din-din, it might be best to throw it out  with zero guilt thanks to those anonymous EU experts.

3. High-nitrate veggies
The minute you munch down on a hummus-dipped baby carrot, special bacteria ninjas in your mouth go straight to work turning those nitrates into nitrites, and what a differentiation a letter makes. Nitrites are a natural anti-inflammatory your body stores to increase your blood flow when it's needed. This is good for your heart, of course, but some expert believe nitrites (or at least too much of them) can be carcinogenic. So what may be good for your heart could build up to levels high enough to eventually cause cancer.

The thing is, if you cook high-nitrate veggies first, that conversion happen before you eat them, and again each moment in time you reheat them, so it might be best to stick to eating these veggies raw or at least limiting the number of times they're heated (make only what you can eat and if you do have leftovers, reheat them only once).

Other high-nitrate veggies comprise celery, turnips, beets, leafy greens, leeks, endive, cabbage, fennel and more.

4. Egg-free cookie dough
A lot of people, myself included, have long been on the hunt for the perfect egg-free cookie dough recipe so we can indulge devoid of fear of salmonella. Bad news, guys. Flour is also at high risk of salmonella contamination, so egg-free doesn't equal salmonella-free. Flour can also be contaminated with E. coli. If you're going to spoil in raw dough, know that you're always doing it at your own risk.

5. Lobster
Bet you didn't realize there's a very good reason why you generally buy chicken that's slaughtered and lobsters that are still alive. The instant lobsters die, the naturally occurring bacteria they contain throw a house party, and the toxins that bacteria releases while doing so isn't always destroyed during cooking. The most humane cooking method is to put lobsters on ice for 15 minutes to anesthetize them before dropping them into boiling water. Or, you know there's always veganism.

6. Rice
If you have a propensity to let cooked rice hang out at room temp after it's done thinking it's totally fine (it needs to cool off, right), you might be in for a surprise. not poisonous rice can actually be susceptible to rapid bacterial spore development, which can cause anything from mild digestive issues to poisoning. So make sure you store that available rice in an airtight container and refrigerate it quickly after eating.

7. Oils
As long as you don't exceed an oil's smoke point, it's safe, right? Not so fast. While this isn't likely to take place at home unless you use (and reuse) less delicate oils like grapeseed or flaxseed, always reheating oils can make them turn rancid, increasing the toxin 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal. That may sound like it was invented by an uncreative sci-fi writer, but it's actually a substance that has been linked to heart disease, stroke, Parkinson's disease and cancer.

Why should you care? since when you eat fried food at restaurants, the oils they use are typically being used over and over to cook a series of meals throughout the day. Yet another reason grilled foods are a better option when you're eating out.

8. Potatoes
Cooked potatoes left at room hotness for too long, reheated incorrectly or stored for more than a couple of days can cause a form of food poisoning called botulism. Not only that, but raw potatoes can develop solanine, a naturally taking place poison that can develop when they're exposed to sunlight. When this happens, potatoes can develop a green color just under the skin. Eating those green parts can cause issues including nausea, headache and exhaustion. The good news is you can just cut off the green parts and everything should be fine  or you could just store your potatoes in a cool, dark, dry place and avoid it all in all.

9. Chicken
You already know consuming raw or bloody chicken is dangerous because of salmonella, but did you know that cooked chicken can cause issues too? Chicken has more protein than red meat, and that's not always a good thing. When you go through the cook-refrigerate-reheat cycle with chicken, it breaks down the protein and might wreak havoc on your digestive system (think tummy aches, nausea, etc.). The best way to use leftover chicken is in a cold preparation like hen salad, but if you do reheat it, only reheat what you'll eat straight away, make sure it's totally heated through and don't reheat it after more than two days. The good news here is that if you properly defrost, cook (to the correct temperature) and immediately cool your chicken, then follow suitable reheating instructions, as well, one reheating should be perfectly safe.

10. High-protein foods (like eggs and mushrooms)
Eggs were bound to make an manifestation on this list, and this time, it doesn't come from their salmonella potential. Beyond that, cooked eggs are a breeding ground for microorganisms, so only make what you can eat and store and reheat them likewise to chicken.

Surprisingly, mushroom fall into this category as well. They have a very complex protein structure (so complex you only need to add broccoli and corn to make a total protein), which may account for their meatiness and ready substitutability for animal proteins, but it also makes them susceptible to develop microorganisms similar to those eggs do. And don't even get me started on "wild" mushrooms, which can easily be toxic if not cooked or prepared properly (or even if they are for some). For example, the ink cap mushroom is venomous when it it's cooked or consumed with alcohol.

Ketamine and Other Drugs Were Found in All-Natural Chicken

11. Cassava

To most Americans, it's known as tapioca (which is made from a starchy tuberous root called cassava). But cassava can be more lethal than people realize. While it won't kill you immediately, long-term exposure to improperly cooked cassava is already causing health disorders and death in countries where people consume it regularly. Cassava should always be dried, soaked, rinse and cooked soon after being harvested. Fortunately, that's exactly how mass-produced tapioca is handled in the U.S. But.maybe don't try to construct your own tapioca on or after raw cassava.
